Back in the Saddle!

Hi everyone!  I know, it’s been ages.  But I’m back in the saddle and hope to return Parking Suns to its former glory soon.

For over a year I’ve been dealing with one fiasco after another.  The major ones are as follows:

In the fall of 2019 I ruptured my Achilles tendon.  It turned out to be more than a rupture – I completely tore the tendon free from the bone.  A surgeon sliced open the back of my ankle, screwed the tendon back into the bone, and confined me to a bed and wheelchair for what seemed like forever.  (Read about it here.)

Once I was over that, the hot water pipe in our second floor bathroom burst and flooded not only the bathroom floor, but the living room ceiling, walls, and floor below it, and then the ceiling, walls and flooring in our finished basement.  It was hugely stressful, but our homeowner’s insurance paid for almost all the renovations, and now we have upgraded lighting, flooring, and a terrific bathroom vanity.

I was deep into rehabilitation for my Achilles tendon, getting physical therapy once a week and working out with a personal trainer at my gym twice a week, and then the Covid-19 pandemic struck and I was housebound for months.  Goodbye gym, goodbye physical therapy.  And why didn’t I do exercises at home?  Because I sat at my desk for 10-12 hours/day, converting my school’s English Language Arts program for Kindergarten through 2nd Grade to an online format, and working with the teachers as they conducted Zoom lessons.  I was busy 7 days a week.

Consequently, I had no time to write.  My Parkinson’s symptoms got worse – especially in the morning when I shuffled about with a thundering festinating gait until my meds kicked in.

But I shouldn’t complain.  Nobody that I know has passed away from Covid-19, and once school started to wind down at the end of June, I started exercising at home again. All in all I’m quite fortunate.

This week we bought a spin bike on Amazon, which you can see in the picture above.  (You can also see the crutches the hospital gave me after my ankle operation, which I never used because Parkinson’s disease made me lose my balance.)  Today was my first day to ride it, and I sweated profusely after just 20 minutes. Note: We bought the spin bike because it was a regular part of my gym workout, and I can’t believe gyms are going to be safe when they reopen.

But enough about me.  It’s time to move on.  What should I blog about next?
