Coming Up: World Parkinson’s Day

April 11, 2018, is World Parkinson’s Day.  It is also the birthday of James Parkinson (11 April 1755 – 21 December 1824), who is credited with being the first doctor to identify and describe Parkinson’s disease in a paper he wrote in 1817, An Essay on the Shaking Palsy.

The Unite for Parkinson’s campaign originated in England with Parkinson’s UK and the European Parkinson’s Disease Association (EPDA), but they have teamed up with Parkinson’s organizations around the world to ensure a global impact.

What to do?  The goal is for everyone affected by PD (Parkies, caregivers, researchers, medical personnel, and practically everyone else) to use social media to spread awareness of PD to friends, family, co-workers and the public at large.  Use the hashtag #UniteForParkinsons and share videos and photos showing how PD affects you.

You can also post a photo of yourself holding a sign that you make that includes the hashtag #UniteForParkinsons and a personal reason why you believe this or what you’re hoping for.  For inspiration for your own photo, check out this article on Parkinson’s Life – which includes ten such photos, including this pic of yours truly:

Phew!  That’s a lot of options!  Be sure to save up your energy to participate in the Parkinson’s Unity Walk in New York City’s Central Park, April 28!
