Every Thursday, as part of my personal “enriched environment” initiative, I post a piece of art, usually from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which recently released online some 400,000 high-resolution images of its collection. All artwork will show a sun (or sunlight) somewhere.
I won’t name the piece or the artist, but instead invite you to study the art and post a comment addressing one or more of these questions:
- What is going on in this picture?
- What do you see that makes you say that?
- What more can you find?
If you have another idea, run with it.

Humans and animals drinking from the same trough of water. What’s that about? And is that a birdcage or a lamp suspended in the arch? This is a crazy crazy picture.
Thank you, Chris, for posting. You’ve posted quite regularly for a long time. I enjoy your comments.
Astonished that the center of the picture is a dangling square box suspended from the ceiling of the arched doorway and in the light, when the action of the picture is way down at the bottom and is rather in thd dark. A contrast
Thank you, Amy, for your comment. Yes, it’s a big question: what is that dangling clear glass box all about?
There’s a statue built into the side of the arch, holding its arms open as if it’s inviting or encouraging everyone to come inside and drink the water. I guess this is a religious picture / scene? I wonder what religious folktale provoked it – miracle, historical fact, etc. Why is it so good for both animals and humans?
Thank you for bringing to everyone’s attention the statue in the side of the arch!
I would love to see this painting in a museum. I would love it if it was enormous. The humans as big as real life. I would stare and stare at it and marvel !!!
Hi Pablo! Thanks for leaving a comment. Yes, I agree with you! It would be great to see this painting at the Met!
I like the round hat on the man off in the distance. I see two women carrying things on their heads. Women were scene as beasts of burdens back then.
