If you’re in Portland right now for the World Parkinson Congress *and* you want to work out in a great gym, stroll over to LA Fitness, which is about a 15-minute walk from the Oregon Convention Center. The gym is huge – as big as Los Angeles itself and minus the pollution! Here are the details:
Address: 1270 NE Weidler Street, Portland. It’s near the Double Tree Hotel, where many Congress attendees are staying.
Facilities: Weights, exercise machines, spacious *and* spotless locker rooms, 25-yard lap pool (three lanes), racquetball courts, stretching areas, juice bar.
Hours: Monday – Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Closes one hour earlier on Friday. Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $15 for a 24-hour pass. This means you can work out on Thursday afternoon and return for a 2nd workout Friday morning at no additional charge.
Additional Features: Unlimited towel service. Loads of exercise classes at no extra charge. Steam room, showers, and lockers (bring your own lock).
In addition: The place really is huge and amazingly clean. It’s also in the basement of the Dollar Tree store, where you can buy all those necessary items you didn’t/couldn’t bring on the plane: mouthwash, razor blades, shaving cream. The pool is pretty empty (of people, not water!) and closes occasionally for aquafit classes.
