Here’s another 1st person account of a Parkie who finds that exercise is not optional if you want to remain relatively symptom-free.
Jerry Yarov lives in (near?) Columbus, Ohio, and was diagnosed with PD eleven years ago, when he was 56. He takes PD meds but notes that exercise is really helping him live day-to-day.
His article is clear and straight-forward.
For example:
…I got involved with the Columbus-area chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation, which offers free exercise classes.
Before long, I could appreciate what the foundation has to say about daily exercise and Parkinson’s: Even though the disease has no cure, daily exercise has been found to help slow the progression.
Experience has shown me how true that is.
Even though I cannot do all that I did every day before the diagnosis, my life remains relatively normal. More important, I remain highly independent.
Now where were we? Oh, yeah – at the gym!
I have had a cold this past week and haven’t had the energy, or enough Kleenex, to go to a gym. 🙁 I’ll be back in the program next week, but I miss working out. Home exercise just isn’t the same!
