Every Thursday, as part of my personal “enriched environment” initiative, I post a piece of art, usually from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which recently released online some 400,000 high-resolution images of its collection. All artwork will show a sun (or sunlight) somewhere.
I won’t name the piece or the artist, but instead invite you to study the art and post a comment addressing one or more of these questions:
- What is going on in this picture?
- What do you see in the picture?
- What does it make you think of?
- What observations can you make?

Well, hey !!!!! Is this supposed to be Apollo falling from the sky, with his chariot and horses in the background, falling too ? He lost his clothes in mid air ! I see that the villages or are they castles , are in flames and burning on the lower left, but not across the water on the right. …………………. Thhis is a very dramatic picture !!!! I feel sorry for the horses ! They look frightened !!!
Did at least some people (men ?) have muscles as thick and pronounced as this back when the drawing was made? I assume this was drawn a few hundred years ago . He’s really thick with it .
In addition to having a buff body, his haircut looks very expensive.
Now you have a case where the actual sun is in the picture (visible in the upper right corner) but the shadows on the man’s body indicate that the source of light is more to the right. How strange.
I would also like to say that I’ve always liked the way shadows are indicated in drawings or etching like this. They’re ddone with various cross hatchings, I believe that’s the term.
The contortions of the falling horses are terrifying. The falling man, not so much.
Definitely a case of steroid abuse! 😉
Jack and Jill went up the hill. Jack fell down all right!!!! Go , JILL. GO !!!!!
Why is half the world in flames below him? Just on the left side of the river. Why is he so far away from his horses and chariot?
I think the drawings of all the falling animals/human/chariot are shocking.
Not even a parachute ! Nothing good will come of this, except for this exciting, chilling etching. !
I mean it !!!
Apollo was not the only guy in myths who drove a chariot in the sky. Time for Madam Wikipedia !!!
