…and Alzheimer’s, Cancer, Old Age in General…
According to this article, four foods (peas, blue cheese, soy beans, and corn) contain a natural compound, spermidine, which influences the body’s circadian rhythm (that is, your body clock) and can potentially stave off PD and other age-related diseases. Apparently, by adjusting your body clock by just a few minutes, you can lead a longer, healthier life.
Quote 1:
According to the experts, peas, blue cheese, corn and soybeans contain a natural compound called spermidine, which reverses the body’s circadian rhythm.
This makes the body ‘younger’ and less prone to age-related diseases.
Quote 2:
Dr Gad Asher, of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, said: “This discovery demonstrates the tight intertwining between circadian clocks and metabolism and opens new possibilities for nutritional interventions that modulate the clock’s function.
“Impaired circadian rhythmicity has been linked to a wide variety of age-related diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and inflammation.”
Research on spermidine hasn’t been carried out yet with humans, but results with mice are promising. Mice have all the luck! (See previous post about experiments with chocolate!)
Here’s a funny side note on blue cheese, from Wikipedia, the font of all knowledge. Bolding mine:
The characteristic flavor of blue cheeses tends to be sharp and salty. The smell of this food is due both to the mold and to types of bacteria encouraged to grow on the cheese: for example, the bacterium Brevibacterium linens is responsible for the smell of many blue cheeses, as well as foot odor and other human body odors.
Hmmm….
Stinkfoot!
