The Sun in Poetry

Chariot of Apollo

When I Rise Up

When I rise up above the earth,
And look down on the things that fetter me,
I beat my wings upon the air,
Or tranquil lie,
Surge after surge of potent strength
Like incense comes to me
When I rise up above the earth
And look down upon the things that fetter me.

– Georgia Douglas Johnson

Note 1:  Georgia Douglas Johnson was a playwright and a member of the Harlem Renaissance.  This poem is not about the sun per se, but there are parallels.  Parallels with the sun, and parallels with having Parkinson’s disease.
