This AARP slideshow lists foods that can help you stave off dementia. You can either click on the link and browse, or just scan these bullets:
- Beans and green peas, for B-complex vitamins
- Foods laden with the antioxidant Vitamin C: lemons, limes, oranges, sweet peppers, tomatoes…
- Almonds, for Vitamin E, as well as other nuts and avocados
- Wild-caught, fatty, cold-water fish for omega-3 fatty acids: salmon, herring, mackerel
- Spinach
- Coffee, coffee, coffee (= 3 cups/day)
The article also suggests getting 10-15 minutes of sunshine a few times every week to boost Vitamin D levels. As with most of the bulleted items above, AARP explains why you should heed its advice. Here’s a quote:
New research suggests that adults with low levels of vitamin D may have a higher risk of developing dementia, Alzheimer’s or other cognitive problems. Exposing your sunscreen-free face, back, arms or legs to no more than 10 to 15 minutes of sunshine a few times a week could boost D levels.
See my earlier blog post for more about the sun exposure.
Bruce,
I PM’d you on face book.

Got it!
Thanks for the food list. I am becoming more forgetful, and will take this menu into account in my meals. I also have a friend recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s who knows nothing about what to do. I think your blog will be invaluable to him.
