Plan B

At age 54, Sherri Wolf was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.  It didn’t really stop her.  She couldn’t water ski anymore, but she could certainly tend her garden.

Life is all about how you handle Plan B,” she says in the opening paragraph of this LA Times article.

Fifteen years later, she moved into a retirement home, where she continued to indulge her passion for gardening, much to the surprise and shock of the other residents and staff.  As a result of her handiwork outdoors and in a greenhouse, there were fresh bouquets everywhere and fresh vegetables and herbs for the kitchen.

She zooms about in a motorized wheelchair, but stands up when she has to reach high.

Chief quote:

“It’s funny. When I’m working on my plants, I forget I have Parkinson’s disease.”

She formed a gardening club with some of the other retirees in the home, but it’s not always successful.  Why?

“They’re afraid they can’t bend down, that they can’t do a lot of things. I feel for them, but they can do it if they want to. There are no problems, just opportunities. We cannot direct the wind, only adjust the sails. Those are words I live by.”

Cheerio, Sherri, mon chérie!
