Every morning my school, the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning, broadcasts a 15-minute Morning Meeting show from the office of our principal, Mr. Shubert Jacobs. A handful of students makes some kind of presentation on the show while the rest of the school watches on classroom SmartBoards. Until recently I did a “Word-of-the-Day” segment, where I’d slowly reveal a vocabulary word and the kids in Mr. Jacobs’ office would decode it as quickly as possible.
On June 3, I returned to the show to introduce a special visitor, Ambassador Kathleen Stephens, a career diplomat who’s a close friend from our Peace Corps days in South Korea. The kids on the show did a great job interviewing her and showing off their skill singing in Korean.
We posted the show on YouTube, and it’s causing a sensation on Facebook. Some viewer comments:
- I wish I went to grade school with a Muppet, and that a beautiful ambassador visited our class!
- Your students are so well poised and confident!
- Wow. That was really cool.
- Awesome video of two of my favorite Peace Corps Volunteers (and a cute puppet).
- How fun! And how meaningful for the students, many of whom may long remember the experience.
